Uruguay

Uruguay is the smallest country in South America. With a population of just over 3 million inhabitants, most of whom live in the capital of Montevideo, it is known as the “Switzerland of South America”. Uruguay can easily be combined with a trip to Argentina as both Montevideo and Colonia are extremely well served by sea from the port in Buenos Aires.

The main industries are tourism, farming - both cattle and arable - and sheep-rearing with many of the associated industries resulting from these prime sources. Either side of Montevideo, Colonia del Sacramento is a beautiful colonial city now declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO and Punta del Este provides an exclusively chic beach resort.

Highlights:

Montevideo- Magnificent architecture and a very welcoming feel to this compact Capital city
Colonia del Sacramento- A pretty, quaint, cobbled-street town beautifully set on the river Plate
Punta del Este- Popular beach resort frequented by wealthy Argentines and Brazilians. The surrounding areas are equally as impressive, particularly the chic resort of Jose Ignacio
Las Termas- The geothermically active Eastern part of Uruguay offers relaxation abound in one of the hot spring resorts
